SOCCER

The Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference continues to be a tight battle between McDonogh, Archbishop Spalding, John Carroll and others.

John Carroll (3-1-2 in conference) came away with a dramatic 1-1 tie against Spalding (3-1-2) on Thursday, scoring a goal in the final minute of regulation to force overtime. Neither team scored in the extra period.

The tie was good for the Patriots, coming off a 4-0 loss to McDonogh earlier in the week. Spalding sits in second place in the standings, just ahead of McDonogh. The Eagles are 4-0-1 in the conference, while Mercy is 5-1-1 in the conference and in first.

John Carroll, despite the one loss, is in fourth place. The Patriots followed their tie against Spalding with an impressive victory over Harford County public school rival C.M. Wright -- which made it to the Class 4A state championship last year.

The best conference game in the next several days should be Spalding at defending A Conference champion Pallotti. That's scheduled for Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL

Two of the top private schools met on Friday night in a battle for first place in the IAAM A Conference.

St. Paul's (5-0 in conference) pulled out a tough 25-20, 25-22, 16-25, 25-18 victory over Archbishop Spalding. These teams could see each other again in the playoffs, and Spalding (4-2) has to figure out how to slow Bailey Webster at the net, something not many teams have done in the last few years.

Mount de Sales (also 5-1 in conference) is trying to keep up. The Sailors had an easier time last Friday with a 25-10, 25-10, 25-15 sweep of Pallotti.

BULL RUN INVITATIONAL

The re-done roster of teams for the postponed Bull Run Invitational at Hereford is going to be coming out next week.

Hereford had to push back the event from last Saturday to Oct. 11 because of a bad storm that hit the area. However, there's other events happening that day, like the Bobcat Invitational in Bel Air where many good teams already had given commitments.
