St. Paul's Volleyball Edges Mount de Sales

The St. Paul's girls volleyball team pulled out a tough victory against Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference opponent Mount de Sales, 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12, to tighten its grip on first place.

Both teams showed their strong points in the match, which helped St. Paul's improve to 6-0. The Sailors (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

St. Paul's Bailey Webster, currently being highly recruited throughout the country, again dominated play at the net with 34 kills. Teammate Joanna Durhan added 17 kills and eight digs. Setter Hailey Fitzgerald ran the offense effectively with 52 assists.

On the Sailors' side, Kasey Mercier's 21 kills and Katy Buck's 18 kills led the way.

St. Paul's will next play host to Covenant Community School while Mount de Sales will take on St. Vincent Pallotti.

MCDONOGH, SPALDING BATTLE TO A TIE

The McDonogh soccer team knew it was in for a tough game against Archbishop Spalding -- and they got just that.

The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes in an IAAM A Conference match-up.

Senior midfielder Gigi Mangione scored the lone McDonogh (7-0-1) goal, in the 10th minute. The Cavaliers (6-1-0) responded with a goal from Maggie Morrison with 15 minutes left in the game.

BULL RUN POSTPONED

Several local schools who were scheduled to participate in the Bull Run Invitational at Hereford last Saturday will have to change their schedules.

Last weekend's bad storms caused the postponement of the event, which was moved back to Oct. 11. The final list of schools which should be able to participate is expected to come together in the next few days as a number of teams won't be able to make it because of other previously scheduled commitments.
