Former McDonogh tennis stand-out Andy Peters completed his freshman year at Middlebury College this spring and got off to a good start with the Vermont school.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Peters finished 16-10 in singles play and 14-12 in doubles in his first year at Middlebury. He helped his team make it to the NCAA Division III semifinals this spring and contributed to the team's 18-7 overall record.
"Andy Peters is the fittest player on my team and he loves to play," said Middlebury tennis coach Dave Schwar. "He had a solid freshman year as a starter in singles and doubles. We need him to work on his quickness and explosiveness to take his game to the next level."
Peters was the Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year as a senior in 2007 when he led McDonogh to a runner-up finish in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association. He defeated Gilman's Ted Kelly to take the MIAA No. 1 singles championship after losing to Kelly twice in the regular season.
The Baltimore native was a No. 1 singles finalist at the New England/Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament as a senior, which was compromised of 16 teams primarily from the East Coast. He came in third place at the Woodberry Forest Invitational Tournament.
Peters was also the Sun's Player of the Year as a sophomore after missing tennis action in his junior season. He won the MIAA No. 1 singles title, won the No. 1 singles title at NEMA and helped his Eagles to a first-place finish in the conference. As a freshman, Peters was a part of an Eagles' team that won the MIAA.
