Curley Wins Track Title

The Archbishop Curley boys track team edged out Mount St. Joseph to win the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association track title this past weekend at Calvert Hall.

The Friars led most of the way but only led by five points heading into the final event, the 1,600-meter relay. George Chambers ran the final leg of it and turned in a strong performance to lift the Friars into third overall and cement the 112-109 victory for the Friars.

Chambers had a good day, winning the 200 (21.95) and 400 (50.18) as well as running on the first-place 800 relay team. Teammates Eric Franklin and Jerome Junior also contributed significantly.

Junior won the high jump (6-6) and placed second in the long jump (21-10.25). Franklin was on the winning 800 relay team and finished first in the 110 hurdles (14.85).

Dorian Johnson led Mount St. Joseph with his first-place finish in the long jump (22-0.75), a second-place effort in the triple jump (45-03) and a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.53).

Teammate Andy Darmody won the pole vault (12-0) while Terrence Robinson finished second in the 300 hurdles (40.28). Darren McKoy finished third for the Gaels in the 100 with a time of 11.20. The Gaels’ 400 relay team won in a time of 44.05, while the 800 relay team took second with a time of 1:31.13.

Gilman finished in third with 96 points, thanks in large part to Jabulani Blyden, who won the 300 hurdles in 39.76 and finished second in 110 hurdles.
