St. Mary's Stumbles But Gets Up

The St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team hit a roadblock mid-season, dropping three straight games in their annually-tough schedule. But the week had a better ending.

After dropping games to McDonogh, St. Paul’s and local rival Severna Park, the Saints rallied to pull out a 12-11 overtime victory over Dulaney Saturday.

The team was on a five-game winning streak and had only lost to one team, Notre Dame Prep, before encountering their current losing streak.

Severna Park limited the Saints’ three best players, Joanna Dalton, Caroline Cochran and Julie Schindel, to just three goals with Dalton having one goal and Schindel having two goals.

Despite giving up 14 goals, goalie Natalie Willis made 10 saves in the game and played well.

But they started slowly again versus Dulaney, falling behind 6-2 before rallying. Cochran got the game-winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

JOHN CARROLL STAYS PERFECT
John Carroll has been dominating the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference with its 8-0 overall record.

The Patriots are the only undefeated team in the IAAM. John Carroll’s offense has been nearly unstoppable throughout the season, especially in the 18-9 rout of Mount Hebron the previous week at Johns Hopkins, the first loss for the Howard County school to a local team in this decade.

Senior Casey Ancarrow led the team with 23 goals through eight games. Seniors Allyson Carey and Grace Gaeng scored 22 goals this season. Carey also leads the team in assists this year with 16.

Senior goalie Lauren McGehee is a major reason for the Patriots allowing so few goals, making many good plays throughout the season when tested.
