Towson Catholic junior Devin Spencer hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, when the Owls went on to defeat St. Frances, 78-74, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinal.
Spencer in-bounded the ball to senior Brandon Greene with 6.5 seconds left in regulation and Towson Catholic down by three. Greene gave the ball right back to Spencer, who then made the game-tying three-pointer from the left wing.
Greene and Towson Catholic took care of business in overtime, outscoring the Panthers 12-8.
Senior Larry Bastfield had a game-high 25 points for Towson Catholic, and Greene was also sensational with 24 points. Senior Vinny Breckenridge scored 13 points for the Owls and Spencer had 10.
Senior Sean Mosley had a team-high 23 points for St. Frances, and classmate Donald Washington scored 10. Sophomore James Hamilton and freshman Ronald Williams both added nine points.
Towson Catholic met Mount St. Joseph in the A Conference championship game Sunday at the Towson Center. Mount St. Joe defeated John Carroll, 72-54, in the other semifinal game Thursday night, but the Owls prevailed, beating the Gaels, 54-44.
Senior Henry Sims led the way for the Gaels with 20 points and senior Justin McCoy added 17 in the semifinal game. Sophomore Eric Atkins also was strong for St. Joe with 16 points, and senior Quentin Jones helped out with 12 points to spark a balanced attack.
Junior Isaiah Philmore led John Carroll in scoring with 16 points and junior Wyatt Smith had 14, but the Patriots couldn't match St. Joe's offensive balance.
ST. MARY’S KNOCKS OUT CURLEY
Nick Groce’s late-game heroics lifted St. Mary’s to a 41-39 victory over Archbishop Curley in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference semifinal Tuesday.
Groce made a free throw with 46 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 39. After the Saints forced Curley to turn the ball over with 14 seconds left, Groce made the game-winning layup with just two tenths of a second left.
Junior guards Trey Quinn and Ronnie Hoffman led St. Mary’s in scoring with nine points apiece. Groce finished with eight points.
Senior guard Brandon Carroll led Curley with 11 points, and sophomore forward Stefon McCray added 10 points.
St. Mary’s lost, 58-50, to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the B Conference title game Sunday at the Towson Center. Mount Carmel had defeated St. Vincent Pallotti, 93-71, in the other B Conference semifinal Tuesday.
Senior Troy Franklin scored a game-high 18 points for Mount Carmel and senior Marc Anthony Franks added 16 points. Seniors Rummell King and Dwayne Wheeler both scored 13 for the Cougars, and senior Stanford McNair helped out with 12 points.
Sophomore Eric Washington led Pallotti with 17 points, and junior Leon Porter added 16 points. Senior Eugene Woody and senior Steve Flowers also helped out with 12 and 11 points respectively.
