Spalding Swimmers Take IAAM B

Archbishop Spalding captured the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference swimming championship last Sunday at University of Maryland Baltimore County. The regular season champion capped off the undefeated season by scoring 463 points, beating out Severn by 168 points.

The 9-0 Cavaliers won despite capturing only four events. Spalding took the top three spots in the 50-meter freestyle. Colleen Miller won the race with a time 26.90 seconds, easily beating out second place finisher and teammate Hannah Huber, who narrowly beat fellow Cavalier Lisa Miller (third).

Severn couldn’t close the gap despite winning six of the 11 events.

Sarah Ebner won the 100 freestyle in a time of 57.15, edging Seton Keough’s Jamie Mutolo. Teammates Meghan Petersen and Kathryn Martin took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the race.

Lindsey Magaw continued the Cavaliers' freestyle dominance by winning the 500 in 5.25.62, almost 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Jennifer McCourt of Seton Keough. Huber, Colleen Miller, Petersen and Martin combined to win the 200 freestyle relay for Spalding in 1:47.71.

The Cavaliers ran away with the title with multiple swimmers finishing in the top five of almost every race.

Huber, Petersen, Ebner and Colleen Miller finished second in the 200 medley relay. Magaw, Martin and Kate Ganley finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle. Ebner took fifth, right behind teammate Rachel Harbarger in the 200 individual medley. Patti Schult and Lisa Miller took third and fifth for the Cavaliers in the 100 butterfly.

Schult also took third in the 500 freestyle, one spot ahead of teammate Melanie Rebechi. Huber and Colleen Miller finished third and fifth in the100 backstroke, while Petersen and Harbarger swam to second and third in the 100 backstroke. The 400 freestyle relay team of Magaw, Martin, Ebner and Lisa Miller finished second to give Spalding some more points.
