Sailors Swim Team Sinks McDonogh

The Mount de Sales swimming team is proving to be the one to beat in Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland. The A Conference Sailors ended McDonogh’s 51-meet unbeaten streak earlier this week, and claimed the league title that the Eagles held for the last five years.

With the 89-81 loss, McDonogh suffered its first defeat since the 2000-2001 season. Mount de Sales clinched the victory with a win in the 400-meter freestyle relay, the final event of the meet. Going into the event, the Sailors led, 79-77, and held on for the win. After trailing McDonogh, 63-61, Mount de Sales took a lead they would not relinquish, winning the rest of the events, and 11 overall. The Sailors are still undefeated at 4-0, while the Eagles dropped to 5-1.

Senior Emily Dean led Mount de Sales, winning the 100 backstroke in a school record time of 59.31 seconds. She also won the 100 butterfly, swam the second leg of the victorious and school record-setting 400 freestyle relay (3:40.22) and finished second in the 200 medley relay.

Also helping the Sailors was Mattie Riley, who won the 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle and finished second in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay. Jenny Nevin also pitched in with second place finishes in the 110 freestyle and breast stroke and 200 freestyle relay.

Notre Dame Prep also has had a good season, going 4-2 and scoring over 100 points in each victory—events they won by at least 39 points each time.

The Blazers started off the season with a 117-62 rout of Catholic, and followed that up with a 104-65 romp over Seton Keough, and a 107- 62 victory over John Carroll. Following back to back losses to McDonogh and Mount de Sales, NDP got back to its winning a 109-60 win over Bryn Mawr.
