Girls Basketball Roundup

SPALDING HAS PLENTY OF YOUTH
Despite the Spalding girls basketball team’s relative youth, they have gotten off to a quick start in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference.

The Cavaliers, coached by Deb Taylor, have gotten to an 8-2 overall record and a 4-1 record in the X Division.

The Cavaliers have four freshmen and four sophomores on their team and are in good position to improve upon last season’s conference record of 7-9. The Cavaliers will need help from the one junior and three seniors on their team.

Sophomore Janay Brinkley is leading the Cavaliers in scoring. Brinkley has averaged 12.8 points per game in four games.

Junior Jordan Clinton (12.8) and freshman Sherae Swinson (9.5) have also been strong for the Cavaliers. Freshmen Maggie Morrison (8) and Shaquilla Curtis (7.8) have helped out, as well. Spalding will need punch from several places this season to stay in contention.

MERCY STARTS QUICKLY
The point production of sophomore guard Ava Trageser and senior guard Khadija Mitchell have propelled the Mercy girls’ basketball team to a quick start in the A Conference's Y Division.

Coach Mary Ella Marion's team jumped to a 10-2 start, 5-1 in the conference.

Trageser leads the Magic in scoring with an average of 8.5 points per game in eight games. Mitchell is second on the team in scoring with an average of 7.3 points per game.

Senior forward Jessica Zikorus (6.9) and junior guard Mary Stefanski (5.9) have also been solid contributors to the Magic.

STRYJEWSKI LEADS MOUNT DE SALES
The consistent scoring of junior Amy Stryjewski has sparked the Mount de Sales offense in the first part of this season.

The Sailors are currently 8-3 overall, 2-1 in the B Conference.

Stryjewski, who has averaged 10.3 points per game in 10 games this season, leads the Sailors in scoring.

Coach Trish Armstrong has a wide range of experience to pick from -- the Sailors’ roster includes two freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and four seniors.

Sophomore Cara Facchina (8.1) and freshman Hannah Schmidt (5.4) have helped the team's balanced offense.

Sophomore Anne Skomba (5.1) and junior Sara Bishop (4.3) have ably complemented the Sailors’ scoring attack thus far in the season.
