McDonogh Nips Seton Keough

The Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland indoor track meet proved to be very competitive last Friday at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex -- for two teams, at least.

In a finish that came down to the wire, McDonogh barely edged out Seton Keough. The Eagles ended up with 139.17 points, just ahead of Seton Keough’s 137.5. Mount de Sales took third , far back with just 30.5 points while Archbishop Spalding took fourth with a score of 30.33.

The Eagles generated some buzz early when they won the first four major events: the 3,200-meter relay, the 55-meter hurdles (Kristen Brown, 8.0 seconds, an IAAM record), the 55-meter dash (Amanda Kimbers, 6.8 seconds) and the 800-meter relay (1:48.0).

The Gators almost caught up with McDonogh by placing first in the 800 meters (Colleen Shea, 2:25.6), the 300 (Erin Brooks, 42.3), the 3,200 (Katie Sacker, 12:02.3) plus the 1,600 relay (4:22.8).

The Gators also did well in the field events, racking up victories in the shot put (Chelsea Tavik, 34-5), the long jump (Erin Brooks, 17-10.50), and the triple jump (Erin Brooks, 37-11.50.)

Despite these wins, the Gators still came up just short of McDonogh for the team title.

In other events, Becky Boulay of Mount de Sales Academy won the 500 with a time of 1:23.5. Erin Laschinger of Notre Dame Prep took the 1,600 in 5:33.7.

For the second meet in a row, Maryvale Prep’s Lacey Shuman matched her all-time IAAM mark of 5-4 in the high jump.
