The St.Paul’s and Gilman squash teams are establishing themselves as top contenders in the newest Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association sport, both starting off the season undefeated.
Gilman (2-0) is coached by Boo Smith and could be looked at as the early favorite as they have rolled past Gonzaga and Park without losing anything, winning its matches by a combined score of 16-0.
The Greyhounds routed Gonzaga, 9-0, and Park, 7-0.
Meanwhile, St.Paul’s, coached by Reid Knox, has had a tougher road to its early-season perfection. The Crusaders got through both matches after doing some work, edging rivals Friends (4-3) and Boys' Latin (5-2).
Each victory in a match gives a team three points, giving Gilman and St. Paul’s six points in the early-season standings.
All games, unless scheduled at an out of area high school, are set to be played at Meadow Mill Athletic Club.
Boys’ Latin started much slower, dropping three of its first four. In addition to the loss against St. Paul’s, the Lakers also suffered a tough loss to Gonzaga (6-5). Bryn Mawr also pulled out a 7-2 victory over Boys’ Latin.
For Friends, the loss to St. Paul’s was the Quakers’ lone early-season match.
Park was shut out in both of its matches, 7-0 losses to Gilman and the Lakers.
