Cardinals Water Polo Wins Title

The Calvert Hall water polo team had another successful season as they captured their seventh straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title and finished with a 25-2 record

Calvert Hall also claimed victory in the Eastern Prep Championship, and was runner-up in the Eastern Championships. The Cardinals have won 58 straight MIAA games going back to 2002, including 19 in a row against archrival Loyola Blakefield, whom they beat in the conference championship, 15-6.

In the title game, Cardinal star Mike Helou led the team with five goals, followed by Arny Warren with four, and Ben Brown added three.

Goalie Dan Kaun made 15 stops while allowing only three goals. Calvert Hall routed Gilman, 21-2, in semifinals to reach the championship game.

The following week the Cardinals traveled to Lawrenceville (N.J.) to win their fourth Eastern Preps invitational in five years. They won all three games they played in, defeating Episcopal Prep (Pa.), 12-5, and Loyola, 13-7, before beating host Lawrenceville Prep, 10-7, to win the title.

One week later, Calvert Hall was back at it, routing Navy AC, 15-6, in the semifinals of the Eastern Championships before losing to Greenwich High, 10-7, in the championship.

However, Greenwich handed the Cardinals their only two losses this year, previously beating them 7-5 in the championship game of the “Beast of the East” tournament held in West Lawn, Pa., in late September.
