St. Joe, Pallotti Head To Break Undefeated

Mount St. Joseph’s 4-0 record is currently the best record in the MIAA A conference. Among the players helping the Gaels to an undefeated start include junior Karl Green, who is ranked number one in the 285 lb. weight class. He won the MIAA title, and placed fifth in the National Prep Tournament. Juniors Bobby Bowman and Benny Schaufele, as well as sophomore Alex Rice, also have contributed to the undefeated record. With the return of junior Frank Goodwin (119 lbs.), who went 49-5 and was a runner-up at Nationals last year, Mount St. Joe will be a tough opponent to face.

It was an exciting day at Oregon Ridge Park Wednesday with 25 teams looking for a championship, as the IAAM Cross Country season came to its conclusion with Notre Dame Prep walking away victorious.

Mount St. Joseph 21, McDonogh 14 (Saturday)

Stephen Spindler's 36-yard interception return for a touchdown capped a 21-point fourth quarter barrage by the Gaels in this MIAA A Conference game. Mount St. Joseph (4-1 overall, 2-0 conference) also got scores from Brandon Kendrick (6-yard pass from Chris Costabile) and Gentry White (1-yard run). McDonogh (2-5, 1-3) scored on touchdowns from Rob Owen (19-yard pass from Rudy Johnson) and Chris Davila (4-yard run), but it wasn't enough.

Four teams -- McDonogh, Spalding, Mercy and John Carroll -- are close to the top spot. A key game comes on Tuesday when the defensive-minded McDonogh team heads to Mercy in a tough late-season game.

The Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference continues to be a tight battle between McDonogh, Archbishop Spalding, John Carroll and others.

John Carroll (3-1-2 in conference) came away with a dramatic 1-1 tie against Spalding (3-1-2) on Thursday, scoring a goal in the final minute of regulation to force overtime. Neither team scored in the extra period.

Spalding Football Tops Curley

Jordan Cohill scored the go-ahead touchdown in double overtime for Spalding, and the Cavaliers went on to defeat Curley, 27-20, Friday evening in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference game.

Panthers Look For Second Straight

The St. Vincent Pallotti girls soccer team pulled off a mild surprise and won last year’s Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title. If the Panthers want to repeat, however, it won’t be easy.

Pallotti plays in one of the toughest conferences for any high school sport in Maryland. The Panthers needed to get dramatic victories at the right times last season -- such as the 1-0 overtime victory against John Carroll -- and will have to get more of the same this year.

John Carroll’s winning of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference lacrosse title was a mild surprise last year. Things were a little different this spring.

The Patriots went undefeated this year and capped their big season May 10 against McDonogh with an 11-6 victory at St. Paul’s.

Brittany Dashiell and Grace Gaeng each had three goals. Casey Ancarrow helped with had one goal and four assists.
