Gaels' Hopes Dashed

The Mount St. Joseph lacrosse team's hopes of making the eight-team Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs were dashed after losing both of their games last week against Calvert Hall and Severn.

The Gaels (7-9 overall) were in 10th place in the MIAA A Conference entering the week by virtue of a 1-5 record and were two games behind eighth-place St. Paul's (3-3). Severn was in ninth place at 2-4. But Mount St. Joe fell to 1-7 and remained in 10th place in the conference, and St. Paul's and Severn both moved to 3-5 and in a tie for eighth.

Chapelgate Takes Top Spot

Chapelgate Christian’s 15-4 record was good enough for the softball team to clinch the top seed recently in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference.

The Hornets started off their season by losing two of their first three games, but they used a strong late-season finish to grab the top spot, winning 10 straight games.

The team has scored 150 runs and was one of the B Conference’s top offensive teams throughout the season.

Chapelgate Captures First Conference Victory, Improves to 8-5

Chapelgate improved their record to 8-5 with wins over From the Heart and conference rival Beth T’filoh. The From the Heart game was never in doubt as Chapelgate ran out to an early 13-0 lead. The final was 63-43. Senior guard Ji-Min Jeong led the Yellow Jackets with 11 points. Strong defense was provided by Senior guard Mike Lovaas, (leading the team with 32 steals), Junior forward Sam Bianconi (14 rebounds) and sophomore forward Sam Orlando (13 rebounds). Sam Orlando was recently pulled up from JV to replace injured forward Jeremiah Murrell.

Chapelgate Lands Come From Behind Win

After a tough loss to Friends, Chapelgate rebounded with a 56-54 come from behind victory over Washington Christian.

Chapelgate fell behind 30-18 at the end of the first half on poor shooting and turnovers. The second half proved different however, as the Yellow Jackets produced offensively and turned up the defensive pressure.

Chapelgate cut the lead to 41-34 at the end of three, and tied the score at 54 with 20 seconds to play. They were led offensively by Aaron McCall (22 points), Ji-Min Jeong (12 points) and Taylor McCall (12 points).

Chapelgate Wins Arlington Baptist Invitational Tournament

Chapelgate began their season with three straight victories to capture the Arlington Baptist Invitational Tournament Championship November 15-17. Led by sophomore guard Aaron McCall, who made the All-Tournament team with 70 points in the tournament, the Yellow Jackets defeated their opponents by an average of 14 points.

After a year and a half of covering Baltimore sports through our weekly newspaper, two weekly radio shows and PressBoxOnline.com, PressBox is expanding its high school coverage with a new web site, PressBoxPreps.com.

PressBoxPreps.com currently covers all of the MIAA and IAAM varsity sports, with scores, schedules, standings, articles and photos. We will be expanding our coverage in the coming seasons to include the public school conferences in the surrounding counties and the city.

School Bells Ring, Titles Up For Grabs

Another high school sports season has begun and with it another set of intriguing questions surrounding the fall campaign. Unfortunately, it begins with the Dunbar football team. The defending Class 1A state champs return a ton of talent but lost their coach recently when Ben Eaton Sr. died of an apparent pulmonary embolism.

Ben Eaton was laid to rest last Saturday at the Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University. It was more of a celebration than a wake.

It was more than just a celebration of what the former Dunbar football coach stood for and how he lived his life but a vivid reminder of just how vital high school sports is in Baltimore and how many lives have been impacted by coaches like Ben Eaton.
