Greyhounds Pin Cardinals

The Gilman wrestling team defeated their MIAA A Conference rivals, Calvert Hall, 59 to 22 on Tuesday night. Both teams were sitting near the bottom of the division and needed a big win to turn their programs in the right direction.

Gilman had pins by Jason Park (112), Cal Riorda (125), Giancarlo Simmons (130), Dennis Foster (160), and Walt Saunders (215), along with a win by technical fall by Tommy Faust (135). Calvert Hall had one pin by Joe Midwig (140) and had a total of four wins, including two by forfeit.

Baltimore Stars Making Impact For Terps

The Maryland men's basketball team had just beaten Charlotte for the Terps' seventh straight win when the friendly banter between teammates Dino Gregory of Mount St. Joseph and Braxton Dupree of Calvert Hall began.

"You can't beat us," said Gregory.

"We just did," said Dupree.

"When it counts," countered Gregory. "Not during a Christmas tournament."

"A win's a win and a loss is loss," said Dupree.

Advantage to Dupree in this one, thanks to Calvert Hall's 47-46 win over Mount St. Joe in the Benedictine Capital City Classic holiday tournament last week in Richmond, Va.

Calvert Hall Hoping to Continue Fast Start

The Calvert Hall boys' basketball team finished last season 7-11 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and 15-17 overall, but thus far this season, the Cardinals seem to have put both losing records well behind them.

The Cardinals are currently 5-1 overall and 1-1 in both the Baltimore Catholic League and MIAA A Conference, with their only loss coming to St. Frances, the top team in the A Conference at 4-0 in the league.

A Springboard to Success

Once again, the prestigious Oriolelanders fall team has been a springboard to college baseball. Sponsored by the Orioles and managed by area scout Dean Albany, the Oriolelanders finished 21-1 in this year's Major League Scout Fall Showcase.

Though the Oriolelanders has featured such illustrious alumni as Mark Teixeira, Gavin Floyd and Steve Clevenger of Mount St. Joseph, Josh Banks of Severna Park and Nick Adenhart of Williamsport High, this year's record was their best ever.

Celebrating The 'Other' Turkey Bowl

Thanksgiving Day, 1969. Longtime local soccer player and coach Joe Speca stood in the middle of Radecke Field in East Baltimore and proclaimed the First Annual Turkey Bowl was under way.

"It was Thanksgiving morning and it was just a normal practice of the St. Anthony's 14-16 CYO soccer team," Dino Mangione said. "Joey Speca coached the team and he stood there and jokingly called it the Turkey Bowl. That was long before Calvert Hall and Loyola started calling their game the Turkey Bowl."

Local Stars Lead Loyola Back To Tourney

The Loyola College men's soccer team (18-1-1) nailed down another berth to the NCAA College Cup Monday, earning a No. 9 seed and a first-round bye, thanks to a group of area players who have carried on the rich Baltimore-Greyhounds tradition -- senior Josh Taylor (Archbishop Curley) and sophomores Mike Deasel (Loyola Blakefield), Mike Gill (Calvert Hall), Kyle Wittman (Calvert Hall) and Wade McHugh (McDonogh) and freshman Vince DiPino (Dulaney).

Calvert Hall Takes State Cross Country Title

Calvert Hall captured their third straight Maryland-DC Private School State title, earning 78 points. The Cardinals also won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship earlier in the week.

Senior Carl Swisko paced the Cardinals with a fifth place finish in a time of 16 minutes, 23 seconds, and junior Nick Rowe placed ninth with a time of 16:39.

The individual winner was senior Zach Sullivan of Archbishop Spalding with a time of 15:33. Sullivan also won the MIAA A Conference race three days earlier for the second consecutive season.

Poly's Rally Punches Playoff Ticket

With the game, the season and their careers on the line, Poly seniors Jon Marcus and Arnold Farmer simply refused to lose.

"Coach [Roger Wrenn] pulled me up at halftime," said senior co-captain Farmer, "and said, 'If we're going to win, the seniors are going to have to get it done.'"

And they did.

Poly came back from a 13-0 halftime deficit to beat City, 16-13, in the 120th renewal of this classic rivalry at M&T Bank Stadium.

Calvert Hall, AACS Win Cross Country Titles

Archbishop Spalding's Zach Sullivan repeated as Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference individual champion, and two of his teammates also finished in the top 10, but it wasn't enough to hold off Calvert Hall from winning a second consecutive conference championship Wednesday at Oregon Ridge Park.

Calvert Hall ended up with 42 points to beat Spalding (51). The Cardinals also had beaten Spalding in a recent head-to-head duel.
