It was an exciting day at Oregon Ridge Park Wednesday with 25 teams looking for a championship, as the IAAM Cross Country season came to its conclusion with Notre Dame Prep walking away victorious.

Gilman 49, Boys' Latin 0 (Saturday)

Blake Countess scored three Gilman touchdowns (90-yard kick return, 15-yard pass from Giancarlo Simmons and a 48-yard pass from David Emala) in this non-conference game. Woody Williams had two scores (13- and 15-yard runs) as Gilman improved to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in MIAA A Conference. Marcus Holman returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Boys' Latin dropped to 3-4 overall.

St. Frances Wins Sixth Straight

St. Frances won its sixth consecutive Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship last week -- but it wasn’t an easy task.

The Panthers rallied late in regulation and made several key plays in overtime to pull out a 43-39 victory over Seton Keough to win the conference title at Villa Julie College.

Saints Rebound from Slow Start

Baltimore Lutheran rebounded from a slow start to come up with a fast finish in the regular season.

The Saints lost their first two games of the season to St. Mary’s and John Carroll but won 17 of their remaining 21 games, posting a 17-6 record, the best in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference’s X division.

John Carroll Nabs Soccer Title

John Carroll made a few late-season changes that helped the Patriots win their first indoor soccer championship.

The Patriots scored three goals in the last 10 minutes to pull out a 5-3 victory over Maryvale Prep in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship at Du Burns Arena.

Brittany Dashiell led the Patriots with three goals. Paige Hollenback scored the Patriots’ other two goals. John Carroll had to rebound from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 to get the win, using a pressure defense that gave the Patriots plenty of scoring chances in each game.

Boys Basketball: Sheppard Sparks Eagles

SHEPPARD EXCELLING AT MCDONOGH
The McDonogh boys’ basketball team got some good point production out of senior Gerrard Sheppard in recent Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference play.

Sheppard has averaged a team-high 24.1 points per game in the Eagles’ last seven contests. Also an excellent football player, he plans to play football for the University of Connecticut next fall.

The Eagles are 7-11 overall and 1-10 in the A Conference.

Zach Sullivan of Archbishop Spalding finished first, and teammates Trevor Keen and J.R. Spencer finished fifth and sixth, but it wasn’t enough to stop Calvert Hall from winning the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference cross country championship for the first time since 1999 last week at Oregon Ridge Park.

Calvert Hall won with 38 points, getting past Archbishop Spalding. The Cavaliers came in second with 56 points. Loyola Blakefield (94) edged Gilman by four to take third place, and Park rounded out the top five with a score of 150.

Eagles Win Title By Large Margin

Chris Chitterling finished third and teammate Will Kang took fifth to lead Annapolis Area Christian School to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference cross country championship last Wednesday at Oregon Ridge Park.

The Eagles finished with 57 points for an easy victory over St. Paul’s. The Crusaders posted 86 points, narrowly beating Friends by four points and Glenelg Country School by six. St. Vincent Pallotti came in fifth with 152 points.
