The Sept. 15 issue of Sports Illustrated includes two pictures of Middle River's Jessica Long. One is an incredible two-page photo of Long holding a towel next to the Beijing Water Cube swimming pool with her two artificial legs, unattached to her body, resting alongside the starting block. In the upper right corner, there's a second picture of Long, smiling after she won her heat in the 100-meter butterfly. Two pictures and two revealing looks at one of the world's most courageous athletes.

Godwin Makes Splash at UMBC

Notre Dame Prep graduate Rebecca Godwin is furthering her high school swimming success onto the college stage at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Godwin will be a sophomore at UMBC in the fall and got off to a great start during her freshman year. Her events during the 2007-08 season included various distance freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke events.

NBAC Swimmers Leave for Olympic Trials

The U.S. Olympic swim trials will begin Sunday at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club will be sending its largest group of swimmers ever. A total of 14 swimmers (15 if you count former NBAC champion Michael Phelps who trains in Ann Arbor, Mich.) left for Omaha Thursday in hopes of landing a spot on this year's Olympic Team.

Nall, Stephens Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Long before Murray Stephens became the man in charge of one of the most successful swim clubs in the country, he was a teacher and lacrosse and swim coach at Loyola Blakefield. And long before Anita Nall stood on the victory stand at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona with a gold medal around her neck, she was a student, first at Towson High, then at Towson Catholic.

NBAC Plans A Big Splash With Honors

The United States Olympic swim trials are set for June 30-July 7 in Omaha, Neb., which means the pool at the Meadowbrook Swim Club in Mount Washington will be churning with Olympic qualifiers the next six weeks. Meadowbrook -- the home of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, which has placed 15 swimmers in the trials (16, if you count Michael Phelps) -- will be the subject of a barrage of national and international attention the next few weeks.

Eagles Earn IAAM A Title

McDonogh won its sixth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title last Sunday at University of Maryland Baltimore County, avenging an earlier loss to undefeated regular-season champion Mount de Sales.

The Eagles defeated the Sailors, 475-432, to win the title, taking seven of 11 events. Earlier this season, Mount de Sales ended McDonogh’s 51-meet winning streak that dated back to the 2000-2001 season, to capture the regular season title.

McDonogh dominated, finishing first or second in 10 of the 11 events and finished in the top three in every race.

Spalding Swimmers Take IAAM B

Archbishop Spalding captured the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference swimming championship last Sunday at University of Maryland Baltimore County. The regular season champion capped off the undefeated season by scoring 463 points, beating out Severn by 168 points.

The 9-0 Cavaliers won despite capturing only four events. Spalding took the top three spots in the 50-meter freestyle. Colleen Miller won the race with a time 26.90 seconds, easily beating out second place finisher and teammate Hannah Huber, who narrowly beat fellow Cavalier Lisa Miller (third).

Sailors Swim Team Sinks McDonogh

The Mount de Sales swimming team is proving to be the one to beat in Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland. The A Conference Sailors ended McDonogh’s 51-meet unbeaten streak earlier this week, and claimed the league title that the Eagles held for the last five years.

After a year and a half of covering Baltimore sports through our weekly newspaper, two weekly radio shows and PressBoxOnline.com, PressBox is expanding its high school coverage with a new web site, PressBoxPreps.com.

PressBoxPreps.com currently covers all of the MIAA and IAAM varsity sports, with scores, schedules, standings, articles and photos. We will be expanding our coverage in the coming seasons to include the public school conferences in the surrounding counties and the city.

School Bells Ring, Titles Up For Grabs

Another high school sports season has begun and with it another set of intriguing questions surrounding the fall campaign. Unfortunately, it begins with the Dunbar football team. The defending Class 1A state champs return a ton of talent but lost their coach recently when Ben Eaton Sr. died of an apparent pulmonary embolism.
