McDonogh and Archbishop Spalding are fighting it out for the top spot in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference heading into the tournament.

Spalding is guaranteed at least the No. 2 spot with the last few games remaining; the Cavaliers locked up that position earlier in this week.

St. Paul's appears to have first place sealed in the B Conference in the final days of the regular season.

TENNIS

Tennis takes place in the fall for girls, while it goes in the spring for the boys. Roland Park shared the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference team title with Bryn Mawr.

The Reds won their last two matches to pull into a tie with Bryn Mawr and earned a piece of the title for the second straight year. The conference's tournament for individuals takes place next week at McDonogh.

John Carroll got help from Colleen O'Connell and Mel Lookingland in a 5-1 victory over Mount de Sales.

Peters Excelling at Middlebury

Former McDonogh tennis stand-out Andy Peters completed his freshman year at Middlebury College this spring and got off to a good start with the Vermont school.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Peters finished 16-10 in singles play and 14-12 in doubles in his first year at Middlebury. He helped his team make it to the NCAA Division III semifinals this spring and contributed to the team's 18-7 overall record.

Tennis Stars Prepare for Championships

The 2008 Maryland State Junior Outdoor Championships will take place July 26-30 at McDonogh School in Owings Mills.

The tournament has boys and girls singles and doubles events, along with mixed doubles. Each event will include age groups of 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 and under, but mixed will not include a 10 and under age grouping.

The 2007 event drew approximately 450 entrants.

The fee for a spot in a singles draw is $45 and a spot in doubles is $40 per team. A mixed doubles spot is free as long as the entrants are already entered in another event.

McDonogh Ends Gilman Streak

The McDonogh tennis team ended Gilman's two-year run as Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champions as the Eagles defeated the Greyhounds, 3-2, Friday, to clinch their 15th conference title in the last 22 years.

McDonogh finished 14-1 on the season. The Eagles' conference title marks the 21st time in 22 years that either McDonogh or Gilman has won the A Conference championship. This was McDonogh's 15th title in that span-- the Eagles also won both meetings against Gilman this season.

St. Paul's Tennis Notebook

The St. Paul's boys tennis team finished 8-3 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and in a tie for third in the conference in the regular season.

The Crusaders' losses came against Friends and perennial league powers McDonogh and Gilman. The 3-2 loss to Friends April 17 ended up depending on which team won the third set No. 1 doubles, which the Crusaders lost, 7-6, despite having match point opportunities.

St. Paul's Seeks Consistency

The St. Paul's tennis team has struggled to find consistent production throughout its lineup thus far in its non-conference and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference schedules.

The Crusaders have been up and down all season with a 6-6 overall record. St. Paul's has a strong 5-1 conference record with its lone loss coming to Gilman, 5-0. Its conference wins have come against Park, Boys' Latin, Mount St. Joseph, Loyola Blakefield and John Carroll.

But the Crusaders have faltered in non-conference play with a 1-5 record.

Tennis Powers Meet Thursday

The McDonogh boys tennis team will host Gilman Thursday in a fight for supremacy in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference, which is nothing new for these two programs.

McDonogh or Gilman has won 20 of the last 21 MIAA titles. The Greyhounds have been the dominant team recently, as Gilman captured the last two conference titles.

Lozinak Leads JC Tennis

Junior Tim Lozinak is more than just the John Carroll tennis team's No. 1 singles player.

Lozinak, one of the best players in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association, is the leader of the Patriots. Not only does he help run John Carroll's practices, he keeps working at his craft after practice is over.

"He leads practice and then goes to practice himself with a coach," said teammate Ollie Shepard. "He's a really strong player."

Lozinak is 1-1 on the season with a close loss to McDonogh's No. 1 player, but won handily in his match at Calvert Hall.
