New Members To Enter 'Hall' At Boys' Latin

The second class of Boys' Latin athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted Nov. 6, and once again it includes a top-notch group of former players and coaches.

"This second group of BL graduates is not only a group of fantastic athletes," said Hall of Fame organizer Mac Kennedy, a 1976 graduate of the school, "it is also a group of outstanding men."

The JCC Maccabi Baltimore dance team recently competed in Detroit and won 25 medals and two choreography awards due to the leadership of its oldest member and captain, Rebecca Bormel, 16.

The team performed in 12 dances and collectively earned nine gold, eight silver, and eight bronze medals. Bormel's lyrical solo and a modern duet by Sarah Greenberg and Erin Kuntz also won choreography awards.

It's Time Out for Walter and Barnes

It was back to school for most area students this week, although something was clearly missing at both Arundel and Forest Park High Schools. For the first time since Richard Nixon was president of the United States, Bernie Walter and Obie Barnes Sr. were not there.

"I know one thing, I didn't miss getting up early," Walter said. "I didn't have to set my alarm for 5:45 in the morning."

Mitchum Foundation Holds Awareness Day

Preston Mitchum Jr. didn't participate in high school sports growing up in Prince George's and Montgomery County, but he is well aware of the role sports play in society.

"Leadership, teamwork, discipline. They are crucial elements in the development of kids," Mitchum said. "A lot of our kids play sports and they are always looking at athletes as role models and our foundation is always emphasizing the athletes that do it the right way"

Preps Scene Will Miss Scott Garceau

Scott Garceau's semi-retirement from Channel 2 after 28 years anchoring local sports is a loss for the local high school sports scene. Garceau and I worked together at WMAR-TV for nearly 20 years, and there has never been a stronger, more passionate advocate of boys and girls prep sports.

For nearly 10 years, Garceau has been the voice of the annual Turkey Day football game between Loyola Blakefield and Calvert Hall, and he has been the emcee of the McCormick Unsung Hero Awards banquet for the last 15 years.

They continue to hide behind the shame and embarrassment of getting caught despite the public’s willingness to forgive. And as they refuse to initiate insightful discussion, despite the next generation’s desire to hear the truth, Roberts is doing something about it. He's making a difference where it counts.

Collin Wojciechowski will never forget sitting on the back porch of his family's summer home in Ocean Pines, listening to his uncles Don, Tim, Bill, Kevin and Paul talk sports and politics. He'll also never forget sitting in the living room of his Uncle Tim's house in Millersville, mesmerized by the veteran teacher's take on American history and government.

And he'll never forget the day in February when he awoke on a frigid Saturday morning at 6 a.m. and drove to Washington, D.C., with his cousin Erin to meet Sen. Barack Obama.

All In Family: Bagli Grandson Makes Calls

His coverage of the Orioles and Colts, the University of Maryland and the Naval Academy and every high school sport from Annapolis to Aberdeen helped make Bagli a Baltimore icon.

Crews Wants To Take Fight To New Arena

You never know when or where you're going to meet a national champion.

"Excuse me," the young lady said. "I'm Franchon Crews, and I just wanted to say hi. It's a pleasure to meet you."

The introduction took place three weeks ago at a restaurant at Baltimore/Washington International Airport. I was waiting for a flight to Orlando and a high school baseball tournament in Coco Beach, Fla., while Crews was waiting tables and talking excitedly about an upcoming event that would once again prove she's one of the best female boxers in the world.

Twist's Story Puts Reality Into Picture

That has been the overwhelming reaction to an editorial Twist wrote in the Baltimore Sun two weeks ago, warning parents of young high school athletes of the dangers of pushing their kids too hard, too soon.

"I coach a girl now who broke down in tears because of the pressure she's under to play well and do all of the things she has to do," Twist said. "It was scary."
